High-strength steels are becoming more and more important for applications in the transport industry. As a result, much research effort is being put into the development of as-hot-rolled dual-phase and TRIP-steels on the one hand, and bainitic steels on the other. The former pairs high-strength to good formability whereas the latter provides a high yield strength in combination with adequate formability. For applications where cold-rolled steels dominate, dual-phase and TRIP-steels are being developed as well, mainly for structural applications. For hang-on parts, there is much interest among car manufacturers for steels with a high (initial) formability in combination with high resistance to deformation in the finished product. Examples of these steels are rephosphorized IF-grades and bake-hardening grades. In this paper, some of the recent developments in the production of hot-rolled and cold-rolled HSS are highlighted. For hot-rolled steels results on the Ympress HR45, HR55 and HR60 are presented as well as results on the formable, high-strength Ympress E690. As far as the hot-dip-galvanised, old-rolled steels are concerned, it will be shown that the ongoing development of rephosphorized steels has enabled Hoogovens to significantly reduce the alloy content and that the bake-hardening grades exhibit an improved reproducibility over partially stabilised compositions.
