A modeling approach is presented for simulating a full-scale crash test of the Sikorsky Advanced Composite Airframe Program (ACAP) helicopter using MSC/DYTRAN, an explicit nonlinear dynamic code. This research is performed under the US Army's Science and Technology Objective (STO) on Crash Modeling and Simulation with the goal of establishing a methodology for predicting the impact response of composite rotorcraft. The modeling approach involved conversion of an existing NASTRAN modal vibration model of the helicopter to a MSC/DYTRAN model. The strengths and weaknesses associated with this approach are discussed. The focus of the simulation effort has been on developing a detailed finite element model of the subfloor region of the ACAP helicopter using MSC/DYTRAN. The model is used to predict the crushing response of the subfloor when subjected to a vertical impact with 10 deg pitch and 10 deg roll onto a rigid surface. The subfloor simulation results are compared with experimental data acquired during the 1987 full-scale drop test of the Sikorsky ACAP helicopter at NASA Langley Research Center and with semi-empirical predictions.
