This paper reviews the current status of battery technology for electric vehicles (EV). Comparisons are made among the various types of batteries and the performance of EVs with special seleced commercially batteries. Battery charging and the corresponding charging algorithms, the prediction methods of remaining eapacity of batteries and an EV battery model are discussed. The following conclusions are available. 1.The lead-acid batteries are widely used by the most important EV manufacturers in the world. In future lead-acid battery may be replaced by Ni-MH batteries. Lithium based batteries are mainly used for demonstration in EVs. 2. The predication of the remaining capacity must be one of the targets of scientific work in future. If EVs will be available in a wide market this problem will appear more and more important. There are many methods to tackle out this problem but none works sufficiently . Thus, research work in this field should be forced. 3. Battery charging algorithms are mainly developed for lead-acid batteries. These methods do not work well for other types of batteries.
