Pure electric braking system, that is, electric brake applied to complete standstill without using friction brake has been proposed by the authors' research group to realize the ideal braking system of electric railcars. This paper describes the new system applied to actual cars, the test results proven by running test and long term revenue service test, and their evaluations. From the results of these studies, series of tests and revenue services, pure electric braking have been proved to be excellent to obtain high performance stable braking, to save energy and to reduce operation costs.
