In November 1999 ISO published the first single, global standard for the aerospace industry. A registration scheme for the new standard will be available in January 2001. Participating certification bodies will have to abide the stringent requirements laid out in the latest edition of TS 157, which now mandates AS 9100. Entitled 'quality systems - aerospace - model for QA in design, development, production, installation and servicing', AS 9100 is the first truly international aerospace quality systems standard, with over 50 additions to ISO 9001:1994 and many amendments to AS 9000. Significant changes and additions to AS 9000 and ISO 9001:1994 are outlined in the article. It is anticipated that all aerospace manufactures currently demanding compliance to AS 9000 will soon require their suppliers to be AS 9100 registered. For suppliers, the upgrade to AS 9100 will result in a robust QMS, capable of meeting the aerospace industry's stringent requirements. The long-term aim is to develop a stable long-term supply-base focused on the quality of processes, the reduction of variation, increased reliability and safety of products and, of course, reduction in cost. The developmenmt of common processes in the areas of non-conformance documentation, first article inspection and process approval requirements are underway. Quality system standards for repair and overhaul of aerospace products and distributors are also high profile projects.
