This paper reviews the update developments of metallic materials and their surface modification technologies mainly that of automotive applications. Emphasis is placed on comparison of properties of various metallic materials used for automotive parts, and their new surface modification technology such as plating, vapor deposition, alloying by high energy rate methods, composite technologies, modeling and simulation technologies. Enabling challenge in research and development of technologies to meet new millennium industrial, environmental and ecological demand, especially, the importance of innovative surface modification technologies and the concept are mentioned.
