Panasonic EV Energy had developed battery pack using 6.5 Ah cylindrical Ni-MH battery for hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) application and started mass production in end of 1997. But in order to widen the HEV application in the market, higher performance battery pack with smaller volume had been requested. Panasonic EV Energy has developed higher power, smaller volume and lighter weight prismatic module for HEV application to satisfy these demands. The newly developed module consist with six 6.5 Ah cells, having specific power of 1000 W/kg which is 167 % larger than the current cylindrical module. By eliminating some of battery pack parts, such as battery holder, pack volume and pack weight can be reduced.
