The tailor-made activation of restraint systems, so-called SMART airbag systems, will be the solution for the future. They will have a system response suitable to the situation with controllable actuators which can be adapted to the ocuppant behavior. To control these actuators a new generation of sensor and electronic systems is necessary. These systems, referred to as SMART Sensors, are described in this paper. Sensors are needed to detect: 1. car dynamics (centralized inertial acceleration and angular rate sensors); 2. peripheral intrusion (acceleration, deformation and pressure sensors), 3. environment information (radar based pre-crash sensors), 4. occupant behavior and classification (weight sensors, ultrasonic sensors, video systems). By combining the car and occupant behavior with the potential of the restraint system, an individually optimized protection of each occupant can be achieved. The new Bosch SMART Sensor system has been developed to cover all the different situations of the different types of crashes (frontal, side and rear-impact and rollover events). The available sensors are divided into four categories: - Vehicle inertial movement sensors, - vehicle intrusion sensors, - interior state. To cover all the different systems with a standardized solution the modular SMART Sensor algorithm has been developed with a plug and play functionality. The crash severity algorithm parts are presented: 1. frontal crash (centralized crash sensing, upfront sensing, pre-crash sensing), 2. rear crash. 3. side crash (centalized side airbag sensing, peripheral acceleration sensing), 4. rollover crash, 5. interior state sensing (occupant classification system, occupant position sensor, ISOFIX sensor).
