A new integrated sensor system - KMA 200 - for contact-less angle measurement is presented. The used magneto-resistive effect measures the direction of the magnetic field instead of the field strength as Hall elements do. This makes the magneto-resistive measurement system robust with respect to drifts of the magnetic material and mechanical tolerances. Moreover, the measurement effect enables the realisation of a powerful on-chip self-monitoring function. The presented solution realises the supervision of all main blocks of the sensor system in that occurring errors are being indicated in the output signal. This additional safety factor is strongly demanded in automotive applications. Therefore, this high precision angle sensor system, being currently under development, will meet the harsh environmental constraints set by the automotive industry, and will be the first on the market offering such extensive diagnosis features. Because the emerging x-by-wire applications require full redundancy including supervision and self-monitoring functions of all involved sensors and actuators, the described sensor system is being well in line with the automotive markets, particularly, due to its pre-calibration and ready-to-use property.
