Recently, the following two new items are strongly required for coil springs used in automotive suspensions. One of them is the control of the force action line of the spring. The second item is to design the geometry of the spring so that the spring can be installed within the space allowed. In order to meet these demands, precise design and production technology is required. However, it has been difficult to produce the springs exactly as they are designed. The developed CAD-CAM system is capable of materializing the designed geometry of the spring without the help of workers' skills and experiences. In order to achieve a precisely controlled spring action line, it is essential that the spring dimensions are precisely made. Furthermore, as vehicles become more compact, precise design and production technology for the coil spring is important in order to prevent interference between the vehicle body and the spring. In order to meet these demands, design technology using FEM has been implemented. However, high precision manufacturing of the spring dimensions that meets the design has been difficult to date. This is because conventional production methods generally rely on trial and error as well as the experience of the operator. Against this background, the authors have constructed a 3 dimensional CAD-CAM system to resolve these problems. This system allows us to automatically generate NC data for coiling from the geometry of the spring obtained by the finite element analysis.
