For charge and discharge of large (40 Amp hour) Li-Ion cells, it has been found useful, to use a bidirectional converter, to transform the low voltage of the Li-Ion cell, 2.9 VDC to 4.1 VDC, up to a high voltage, when discharging, and transform down from a high voltage to the cell voltage, when charging. This bidirectional converter is called the 'Up/Down Converter'. An 'Electronic Fuse' is inserted between the Li-Ion cell and the Up/Down Converter. The Electronic Fuse is protecting the Li-Ion cell in case of short circuit in the Up/Down, or in the battery charge/discharge regulations.
