The US Golf of Mexico is a major source of domestic oil and gas supplies. Recently, some have begun to speculate that this important producing area will soon experience a decline in production with significant implications for higher domestic natural gas (and oil) prices, supply shortages, and decreased energy supply. This three-part series of articles examines the future of the Gulf of Mexico in light of these concerns. This first article reviews the development and production history of the offshore Gulf of Mexico, focusing on deepwater areas in more than 200 m of water. The second article will focus on shallow water areas. The third article will examine how continued technology developments and public policies will shape the future of oil and gas resources in the gulf.
