Friction pair wear in brake mechanisms and effects of the wear products on environment were discussed. Elimination of asbestos and substitution of asbestos fibres with other materials did not solve the problem at the present state of knowledge. A reduction of wear rates of friction pair materials, use of some novel wear-resistant materials for the brake construction, compression made of engine operation, electronic control of braking systems (including the adaptive cruise control), energy recovering during the braking as well as a proper maintenance of the brake systems were given as examples of efficient measures for decreasing the environmental impact. In Poland, the emission of worn friction materials and disc or drum brake materials is estimated as 1500 t/year and 1900 t/year, respectively. The mechanical and chemical (toxic) effects of aramide, kevlar, steel or glass fibers on environment and human population is not known yet. The rubber, metal and mineral dusts can also damage the environment and living organisms.
