Noise accompanying the process of rail vehicles operation detrimentally affects the environment. To restrict the harmful effect of noise pollution, a variety of technological measures is used like acoustic screens the routes along. Effect of tribological and vibrational phenomenous on noise generation and propagation (wheel-rail rolling, train-air friction, railroad bridges and tunnels, vibration at braking) were discussed in detail. Use of special brake inserts was recommended to decrease the wear of wheel flanges and limit the noise generation.
