The critical driveline NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) design issues are presented and the driveline NVH contributions to vehicle NVH performance are discussed. A general optimization process for driveline NVH design is described and modal alignment and dynamic response force case studies are conducted. The results show that optimization problems can be significantly simplified and easily understood by proper selection of design components and their design parameters. Modal energy participation and design sensitivity data are very useful to serve this purpose. It is also critical to include important design and manufacturing constraints in the driveline optimization to find realistic optimum designs. Additionally, Genesis and IDEAS are successfully used to facilitate the optimization process. In summary, it is proved that complicated driveline modal alignment and system transmissibility can he successfully designed using optimization techniques. Future work includes dynamic gear meshing stiffness optimization and hybrid vehicle model optimization.
