This paper investigates the design and performance of a 3.5 kW SR (Switched Reluctance) automotive generator operating on a higher voltage system, 42 V. The generation speed range is from 1,600 rpm to 18,690 rpm. Specifically the paper presents a discussion of the design process of the 6/4 3-phase SRG (SR-Generator) and its controller, and the performance of the prototype unit. First, the design characteristics of the SRG are discussed based on the generator requirements. This is followed by the presentation of the SRG simulation results. Then, the performance of the experimental SRG prototype unit is discussed and the conclusions are given. lt is found that the SRG prototype exceeds the required power above 5,000 rpm. It is also shown that the efficiency of the system is higher than the typical efficiency of the Lundell generator above 5,000 rpm. However, below 5,000 rpm the SRG does not meet the expected power. Furthermore, it is found that the poor performance at low speed is due to switching losses in the power converter and core losses in the machine. Finally, it can be concluded that the SRG technology has avenues to be investigated for improvements with a great potential for automotive generator applications.
