In a joint project Paul Scherrer Institut PSI, FEV Motorentechnik and Volkswagen have developed the fuel cell hybrid vehicle 'Hy.Power', a technology platform for the demonstration of a powertrain combining a hydrogen fuel cell system and a double-layer capacitor arrangement. The powertrain is described in this article. The fuel cell stacks are the core components of the energy conversion unit. Fuel cell stacks, hydrogen supply system, air supply system, and cooling system are described. The supercapacitors (electrochemical double-layer capacitors) utilizing an organic electrolyte and activated carbon as electrode material were especially developed for this application and are described as well. Power electronics and controls of the powertrain (control-functions of the fuel cell system and energy management) are outlined. The vehicle integration with the issues vehicle concept, electric drive and adaptation of the vehicle is discussed. Tests results concerning measurements on the roll-dynamometer bench, (start-up and stop procedure, system efficiency) and driving on the road are presented.
