An inflatable cover for seatbelt improves the safety of automobile occupants. In US Patent 6370924, Takata Corp describes a warp-knitted fabric that can form such a cover. The action of inflating serves to shorten the belt longitudinally so that it tightens against the wearer, offering increased safety. The invention is based on warp-knitted sleeve of fabric mounted over a conventional restraining belt. The inflatable belt comprises a shoulder belt running diagonally from one side of the occupant to the other and a lap belt, as well as a buckle into which slots a tongue to engage the system. An intermediate guide assists in positioning the belt. In the event of a collision the generator releaes high-pressure gas through the buckle arrangement into the system. Consequently, the inflatable envelope over the belt expands. The envelope is a cylindrical knit that covers the restraining belt and expands to cover the chest and waist of the wearer.
