Generalized predictive control (GPC) is a discrete time control strategy. The controller tries to predict the future output of a system or plant and then takes control action at present time based on future output error. A generalized predictive control law has been derived for a simplified linear vehicle model for a brake based yaw stability control system. Yaw Stability Control (YSC) Systems have been established in the automotive industry as a safety/performance feature. YSC generally prevents the vehicle from under-steering and over-steering in a handling maneuver (e.g. lane change, slalom, etc.), particularly on a low coefficient surface. The predictive nature of the controller has been utilized to predict the yaw rate error growth, which is then utilized to derive the control law. Simulation results show that the vehicle can be effectively stabilized in an oversteer/understeer condition on snow surface using the predictive controller. The desired yaw rate tracking performance is very good as evident from the simulation results. Further investigation of the controller is necessary to compare the performance enhancements for other yaw stability controllers with the proposed predictive controller presented in this paper. Simulation results show that the predictive feature of the proposed controller provides an effective way to control the yaw stability of a vehicle.
