Engineering knowledge is the key to function design; not only the contents but also the way the knowledge is structured. This was demonstrated in both of the discussed design experiments. As shown with the aircraft design as well as with the refrigerator design, the ability to come up with uncoupled or decoupled designs is driven by knowledge and knowledge structure that are subject to constraints and relations from CAs and physics. Because of the importance of knowledge and knowledge structures in interpreting design matrices, it is proposed to add references to knowledge rules in the design matrices rather than just Xs. Future work includes clarifying strategies for knowledge structuring, incorporating customer value attributes and constraints into the matrix representation, and further looking for necessary conditions (but not sufficient conditions) for good design.
