This paper describes the development of a far infrared sensor array for Vehicle Occupant Classification and Position Sensing for use with the next generation of airbag Systems. The sensor array is based on a novel, low cost micro-machined resistive bolometer. In addition to this primary application the sensor array can provide information about the temperature of the vehicle occupant to adjust the climate control, or when the vehicle is parked act as a passive sensor for intruder detection. Other applications may include looking outside the car as an aid to detect vulnerable road users such as cyclists or pedestrians.
