Obstacle detection is a prerequisite for a variety of innovative safety and driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance, anticipatory crash sensing, occupant position recognition or night vision. Depending on the specific application, obstacle detection systems enable the measurement of the position, range, range rate or temperature of objects in the sensor's field of view. Typically, this information will be processed by a subsystem in order to control the vehicle dynamics or to deliver an appropriate warning to the driver that enhances his situational awareness. This overview introduces the motivation for collision warning/avoidance systems and the most common obstacle detection techniques used for exterior and interior sensing. It illustrates typical applications and discusses benefits and drawbacks of each technology. An integration of obstacle detection systems and advanced applications is presented in the form of a concept car built by Delphi to demonstrate the capabilities of future integrated safety systems.
