The use of the computer controlled electric screwdrivers by Volvo for performing all the main screw connections in the manufacturing process is presented. The screwdrivers are controlled with a PC-based controller, CX1000, that transfer all the key data, including tightening forces, to a central database. The data can be easily retrieved from the database over the car's production life-span. The CX1000 controller, supplied by Beckhoff GmbH, Germany, integrates a programmable logic controller (PLC), network and internet access via Ethernet interface, a Control Panel interface, and the local input/output set-up. Volvo has selected the US based manufacturer GSE to supply the electric screwdrivers.
