Coatings are utilized on the exterior of aircraft surfaces to serve as a protective layer to the underlying substrate and to provide decorative features. Typically, coatings are applied as a solvent based solution through a spraying process. Over the past few years, there has been considerable focus throughout the aerospace industry on the development of low volatile organic coatings (VOC) for use on exterior aircraft surfaces. In an attempt to provide high performance VOC-free coatings, 3M has been involved over the past five years developing applique film technologies for aircraft surfaces. As a result of these efforts, 3M has developed applique films consisting of a 0.09 mm layer of a high performance fluoropolymer backing coated with a 0.05 mm layer of an acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive. This paper describes recent advances of applique film technologies as VOC-free coatings for aircraft surfaces.
