Recent large 2-stroke marine engines are operated in the condition of high cylinder pressure and longer piston stroke. With these trends, piston rings and cylinder liners are in severe lubricating condition, and sometimes their excessive wear appears in the earlier stage of the voyage. Especially when scuffing takes place, the wear increases rapidly and reaches to the limit in extreme cases. The wear speed when such abnormalities happened is so high that shipowners can not cope with the difficulties by the periodical check and maintenance of the cylinders. One of the methods for resolving the above problem is the condition monitoring of cylinders. If the occurrence of abnormalities such as breakdown of piston rings is detected by the monitoring system in the earlier stage of wear, then the ship's crew may take effective action against the abnormalities. As a method of condition monitoring of cylinders, this paper describes the method of vibration monitoring for fault diagnosis of piston rings and cylinder liner. The effectiveness is demonstrated based on the vibration data that were measured in manufacturer's shop trial and in ship.
