To improve the speed of the Shinkansen train, the lightening of weight is indispensable. Especially, the lightening of unsprung mass affects ground vibration and running stability, thus shows big influence on speeding up the train. However, there are few unsprung mass components such as wheels, axles, axle boxes, and break disks, etc. In the present study low-pressure casting was adopted to produce aluminum composite break disk for better internal material quality, and aluminum disk alloy containing 20% ceramic particle is used for better wear resistance. The break disk had a weight of 35 kg and is 50% lighter than present steel disks. The designed performance was checked through running tests. Under given test conditions the aluminum composite material brake disk was set on the series 500 Shinkansen train and the emergency brake tests (EB) were carried out. Temperature measurement were carried out and showed following results: 1. At the center of disk point the maximum temperature was about 370 degrees centigrade obtained from the speed of 300km/h to halt which shows enough margin to the criterion of 550 degrees centigrade 2. In the axle point the highest temperature was 112 degrees centigrade in 300 km/h EB, having enough margin to the criterion of 150 degrees centigrade. These results show that the heat generated by brake energy is radiated into air without being conducted to axle so much with aluminum brake disk. The appearance of the disk showed slight grooves on the surface but no crack nor other defects. Also there was no dent observed at the connecting point with bolts. The highest distortion of a disk was about 4800 micron st, and considered from the mechanical properties of the material, it was enough marginal value. From these results, it is concluded that the aluminum composite material brake disk has the sufficient temperature characteristics and strength performance. In future, brake performance, the influence to the ground vibration, and durability will be checked.
