The application of the rigid ring tyre model, in combination with a new enveloping model with elliptical cams, mounted in a quarter vehicle system is described for both specific obstacles, like potholes and bumps, and measured road profiles that fit the general category of 'broad-band random signals'. Validation results of both the tyre and vehicle models are presented. In addition simulation results of both the nonlinear and linearised vehicle models were analysed extensively to obtain insight into how the vehicle system behaves and to investigate how the enveloping model and the effective road surface contribute to this behaviour. One of the aims of the linearisation of the vehicle model was to answer the question whether spectra of the effective road inputs (assessed at constant nominal vertical load) for arbitrary road profiles and transfer functions of the vehicle model would be sufficient to obtain spectra of outputs which are important for ride comfort analyses. The main conclusions are as follows: The rigid ring tyre model, in combination with the enveloping model, can be used in a vehicle system. The shift between the elliptical cams of the enveloping model is dependent on the tyre vertical load. Typically, it is about 80% of the contact length of the tyre. The shape of the elliptical cams of the enveloping model is virtually independent on the tyre vertical load and it corresponds to the outer tyre contour (in the zone of potential contact with the obstacle) of the loaded tyre standing on a flat road surface. The model can deal with arbitrary, measured, uneven road surfaces.
