THE CORROSION behaviour of titanium and titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V in a deep-sea environment the Indian Ocean is presented. For the first time, coupons of these materials were exposed for longer duration at great depth in the ocean. Weight-loss measurements did not show any corrosion of the titanium or the alloy at depths of 500, 1200, 3500, and 5100m. Tensile tests were carried out on the deep-sea exposed speciments, and were compared with unexposed control specimens. The results show that the tensile strength did not change after deep-sea exposure.
