The arising health problems of operators of off-road vehicles point out that still a lot of effort has to be put into the design of effective seat and cabin suspensions. This paper reports of the development of a pneumatic suspension element and its use in seats and cabins. The paper describes the element in detail and develops a model using thermodynamics. The accuracy of the model is proven by performing the necessary measurements. The device is used in a seat suspension and compared with common used seat suspension systems. It shows significant improvements compared to conventionally used seat suspension systems. Four different elements are used in a cabin suspension and evaluated on a hydraulic test rig, where they are excited with a swept-sine in the frequency range 0.2-10 Hz: mechanical suspension with hydraulic damper, air suspension with hydraulic damper, air suspension with integrated air damper, air suspension with extra air volume and air damping through a throttle valve. The hydraulic damper has a negative influence on the attenuation level at higher frequencies, whereas the benefits of air damping are clearly visible. Compared with all three other suspension types, the suspension using the pneumatic element has a lower eigenfrequency and is therefore faster in achieving high attenuation levels in the low frequency region mostly excited in agricultural machinery. The tests reveal improvements in the objective comfort parameters up to 50 %.
