Meanwhile composite materials are well established within the aerospace industry due to their advantageous weight specific mechanical performance. The increasing demand for the reduction of material and manufacturing cost leads to the introduction of new textile preform technologies in addition to the prepreg process. Both the combination of textile preforms together with prepreg and the manufacturing of complete components using textiles are feasible. Beneath improved cost efficency these textile processes offer a high potential for the creation of novel specific fibre architectures and for automation. Within the nationally funded CFRP fuselage project of Airbus Deutschland concepts have been developed to reinforce window cut-outs in a prepreg design by textile fabrics that offer a load specific fiber orientation around the window which would not be feasible by all-prepreg lay-up. For the A380 fuselage a pressure bulkhead manufactured by textile preforming has been introduced to serial production. A gantry stitching machine is used by SAERTEX Stade to manufacture preforms 8m x 7.5m large of non-crimp fabric which are subsequently draped on the tool at the Airbus plant Stade to finalise the component in a resin film infusion process. Beneath reduction of cost and production lead time these two examples even show the potential of textile preforming for the manufacture of components in terms of size, geometry or fibre architecture which would hardly be practicable solely using prepreg.
