The paper presents a transverse flux permanent magnet motor suitable for the application as wheel hub motor. The proposed design procedure evaluates the motor performance in terms of mean torque and torque ripple by sequences of 2D FEM analyses, taking into account the geometrical constraints, the electromagnetic aspects and the magnet and motor mass. The application of the procedure enables the choice of some favourable configurations. A further analysis by a 3D FEM code provides the check of the 2D results as well as the evaluation of the iron losses which makes possible a more accurate selection of the motor parameters.
