The amount of infotainment applications in cars drastically increased in the past few years, as well as the possibility to control certain properties and settings of the car itself. While offering a much higher level in comfort, the numerous new functionalities such as air conditioning, navigation systems and many more put an additional burden on the user, since their operation gets more and more complicated. The importance of speech dialogue systems in automotive environments drastically increased in the past years. More and more applications need to be controlled by the user. Using speech interfaces can improve safety during driving. However, there are special requirements to the speech dialogue in such environments. This paper is outlining some of them and proposes solutions. As the major topic design issues concerning the integration of speech into graphical user interfaces are discussed and the GUIDE design tool is be introduced. GUIDE was developed as a tool for designing GUIs and was recently extended to allow the simultaneous integration of speech dialogue. As discussed in the paper, such an integrated design is extremely important for the development of natural and intuitive human machine interfaces (HMI).
