The GAPS (Global underwater and marine Positioning System, launched by iXSea, includes a 3D acoustic antenna, a FOG (Fiber Optic Gyroscope)-based INS (Inertial Navigation System and electronic boards for GPS (Global Positioning System) integration, data fusion, and algorithms. GAPS is a multiple-system, which can simultaneously provide the positions of a surface vessel and several subsea vehicles, including a number of divers. The system can be applied for precise towfish positioning due to the tetrahedral design of the acoustic antenna and can be installed on a buoy with a radio link for riser monitoring. At the core of GAPS-INS is the IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), composed of three FOG and three accelerometers mounted on orthogonal axes. The FOGs provide the instantaneous rotation of the system and the accelerometers provide instantaneous acceleration of the system. The FOG itself contains a fiber coil, a light source, and a coupler, while GAPS's INS algorithm consists of inertial computation and Kalman filter. GAPS sends a command either acoustically or through a cable to obtain the position of an acoustic transponder which replies by emitting an acoustic chirp. GAPS has the ability to solve the subsea positioning problem in many situations where other systems have failed.
