Robert Bosch GmbH has decided to develop particulate filters for diesel cars and light commercial vehicles that are based on sintered metals and have a particular geometry ensuring that there is sufficient space for all the deposits likely to accrue during the normal service life of a vehicle, with or without the use of additives to promote filter regeneration. This particular pocket design results in a more complex exhaust gas flow within the filter compared to monolithic filters used so far. CFD software is used to study the flow within the filter. Challenging aspects of modelling are grid generation of the complex geometry, description of the filter material as a porosity, turbulence interaction at the filter surface, flow resistance of the deposited diesel particulates, deposition behaviour of the soot, and oxidation reaction kinetics during regeneration. For validation purposes a single pocket of the Bosch filter is investigated in a transparent flow channel. Measurements of local channel wall pressure and of flow velocity - acquired by means of particle image velocimetry (PIV) - are compared to simulation results to choose a turbulence model.
