The demand for minerals, economic growth, and trends in mineral production may create long-term opportunities, affecting the outlook for development of seabed mineral resources in terms of their potential, prospects, and limitations. Greater demand for minerals is influenced by economic growth and increased industrial development worldwide. The outlook for development of deep seabed minerals must give consideration to competing land-based resources and future markets for hard minerals. Prevailing trends in mineral production and consumption suggest that the mineral demand for the near future will be affected by factors such as increased nickel and cobalt production in Australia. Changing patterns of economic growth, new demands in response to the growth of electronics sector, and developments in automotive technology contribute to a long-term perspective for tighter supplies and rising prices. Trends in metal use and mineral production will support consideration of the commercial development of deep seabed mineral deposits.
