Noise caused by friction and vibration in conventional wheel support systems makes it very difficult to adapt such systems to special environments (for example, clean room application or high speed operation). A special magnetically levitated conveyance system has been developed by Moon, Cardwell et. al. in 1997. In this system, the pining force of a high temperature super conductor (HTSC) is used for the levitation and guidance. This system realizes contactless levitation without control. The authors have developed a magnetically levitated system with permanent magnet rail and carrier with bulk HTSCs. Additional permanent magnets are introduced under the load stage of the carrier. Stable levitation has been realized with various loads. In this paper, the propulsion method of this hybrid conveyance system is presented. In order to obtain a lager thrust force, the permanent magnet rail has been equipped with electromagnets. This propulsion magnetic rail shows better thrust characteristics than the previous one. In the developed hybrid conveyance system guidance is obtained by the pining force of the HTSC and the levitation force by the permanent magnet. The design of the propulsion rail system is described in the paper. Part of this research was financially supported by the Kansai University Grant-in-Aid for progress of research in graduate course.
