In the course of weight reduction for reducing fuel consumption in the automotive industry joining technologies for lightweight bodyshell structures are becoming more and more important. The paper presents test results of the so-called KS-II specimen which were bonded with a one-component hot curing toughened epoxy adhesive and was tested under different loading angle and both quasistatic and dynamic loads. The paper underlines the importance of local force and displacement measurement on the specimen since the machine rigidity and dynamic effect influence the test data. This requires advanced testing machines and sophisticated measurement systems such a high speed camera. Additionally, the paper presents finite-element (FE) simulations of the experiments. The material description of the epoxy based adhesive uses an extended linear Drucker-Prager criterion with a damage initiation and damage evolution criterion. The strain rate dependent material description implemented in the FE-model is based on test data from dogbone and thick shear lab specimen for low and high strain rate.
