An ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) certification test was conducted for a new submarine hull by employing FBG 8fiber Bragg grating) optical strain sensors that monitored the strains on both interior and exterior surfaces of the hull. The FBG sensors were primarily chosen over conventional RSG's (resistance strain gauges) because of their insensitivity to moisture. The use of these sensors greatly reduced the installation time by avoiding tedious waterproofing steps and provided 100% reliability throughout the test. A total of 97 sensors were applied to the submarine and associated structures on six optical fibers. Two sensors provided temperature compensation while the others were arranged in triaxial, biaxial, and uniaxial configurations. Other benefits of the FBG sensors are their small size, light weight, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and no-spark hazard characteristic. The success of the submarine certification project points toward more applications FBG sensors in marine certification.
