More than 10.000 MC & ME engines are now in service or on order with more than 200 million Bhp installed. The latest development of the most successful marine engine series ever is the ME/MEC series of which more several hundred engines are on order or delivered. At the times of writing (the abstract) approx. 50 engines of this design are in service ranging from the S50ME-C up to the K98ME/ME-C. MAN B&W Diesel has been devoted to the development of electronically controlled low speed diesels for a long time, actually since the early 1990s. The first engine featuring the ME technology is a 6L60MC/ME, the name indicating that it was originally built as a conventional MC engine with camshaft, and then later rebuilt into an ME engine. The ME version of this engine has now logged more than 33.000 running hours, and it has throughout this period been used to fine tune the ME technology. This paper will deal with the service experience obtained until now with the first commercial ME/ME-C engines in service. The ME-concept will be described and service experience with the engine control system, the hydraulic loop, the hydraulic power supply and the components of the hydraulic cylinder units will be emphasized on. Advantages of recent software updates will be described and related to service experience. Also items like training of shipowner staff and documentation in this relation will be touched upon. Furthermore update on service experience on the MC/MC-C engine series will be given focusing on engine structure, cylinder condition and bearing performance. For the MC/MC-C engine series, the feedback from service has over the last 4-5 years resulted in an extension of the Time Between Overhauls (TBO). We have not yet fully experienced the benefits of this development. However, the latest feedback from service indicates that 5 years between major overhauls are looking to be realistic. It will be discussed how this development can benefit different operators. Also the development in relation to the cylinder condition with focus on cylinder oil consumption will be touched on.
