Automobile manufacturers are placing increasing store not only in technical differentiation between their vehicles but also in emotions and driving passion. Properties that can be experienced such as feel, smell and not least sound can greatly enhance the appeal of a model, along with the vehicle design. The look of a vehicle and its acoustic behaviour are immediately observed by the customer. The acoustic quality is therefore becoming increasingly important when defining the vehicle character. The continuous acoustic optimisation of engines and auxiliary aggregates and the higher quality of the interior soundproofing have significantly expanded the scope for a more specific sound design. Different options are available to give the driver significant acoustic feedback during acceleration and high load conditions. Passive sound applications can bring back the natural, sporty sound of vehicles to the passenger compartment. Since these are passive components, the behaviour of the source and the sound transmission from the engine bay to the passenger compartment have a great effect on tuning and efficiency. Only noise contents that already exist and which harmonize with the sound transmission by other transfer paths, for example the engine bearing, are transferred. Since the noise is generated by the engine, the authentic character of the engine is retained. Depending on the demand and the boundary conditions different sound transmitters can be applied to the intake system. The Symposer can be fitted to both naturally aspirated and charged engines. The sound designs of petrol and diesel engines are currently extremely diverse. With diesel engines the focus is still on improving the quality of the sound: The typical diesel sound is undesirable. Furthermore, there are initial signs of a conscious design of the acoustic feedback in vehicles with diesel engines.
