The article describes the activity carried out by Iveco in the study and development of an optimized transport concept, starting from the latest proposals of transport solutions. The goal of this concept is to realize a prototype vehicle (tractor + semitrailer combination for long distance mission) that could, on one side, improve the load capacity in terms of volume (up to 10%) and weight (up to 15%) by means of an extended length semitrailer (up to 18 m), minimizing, on the other side, the fuel consumption. The fuel economy has been carried out focusing the development on three main items: (i) an aerodynamic optimization of both the tractor and semitrailer units, reaching an average reduction in drag coefficient of 20% that gives an 8% fuel saving; (ii) a mechanics and components optimization, working on new engine solutions, high efficiency auxiliaries and driveline; (iii) the use of innovative tires with optimized compound and new design aimed to reduce the rolling resistance. The results, tested on road and shown in the article by Iveco, demonstrate the feasibility of such a concept: the solution combines more load capacity with an optimized fuel economy (up to 24% on l/ton pay-load 100km basis, compared to Euro5 std.), thus reducing the operating costs and increasing the efficiency and the sustainability of the road transport system from a global point of view (-13% circulating vehicles and -25% CO2 emissions).
