The project CUTE (Clean Urban Transport for Europe) comprised the operation of 27 fuel cell buses and their hydrogen infrastructures for two years under everyday conditions. Its main objective was to demonstrate fuel cell buses and their hydrogen supply infrastructures, proving their reliability in revenue service. 27 buses were running in nine European cities, three per site. This ensured a wide range of operating conditions in terms of climate, topography, and traffic conditions. The nine cities were: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Hamburg, London, Luxembourg, Madrid, Porto, Stuttgart, and Stockholm. This ensured a wide range of operating conditions in terms of climate, topography, and traffic conditions. The nine cities were: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Hamburg, London, Luxembourg, Madrid, Porto, Stuttgart, and Stockholm.y site had a hydrogen refuelling station (350 bar rated pressure), and most of the facilities included a plant for on-site generation of the fuel (steam methane reforming or water electrolysis). More than 192 tonnes hydrogen were dispensed to the vehicles over the two-year period. About 120 tonnes were produced on site. This paper focuses on the results and experiences with hydrogen infrastructure operation. Quantitative characteristics such as availability, energy efficiency, and hydrogen losses are discussed. Problems during the operating phase are outlined and challenges for future work are highlighted. CUTE was the largest project for demonstrating hydrogen and fuel cells in road transport. It received support from the European Union under its Fifth Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP5).
