A combination of a half-toroidal variator and planetary gear mechanism comprise the Infinitely Variable Transmission (IVT) system without any convential vehicle launch devices. In this paper, the power transmission efficiency of such a system is focused on using theoretical calculation and experimental results. For the IVT, the control scheme around zero-speed is one of the important issues of this technology. The conventional torque control concept was discussed in this area. The authors also describe a new control concept based on the speed ratio control scheme with additional torque compensation, and show the results of this IVT mounted on 4.3-L passenger car.
