Motors used in EPS systems must display low values of cogging torque. To achieve these requirements, studies have been conducted on methods that reduce the value of cogging torque in EPS motors. This project studied the cogging torque of a motor for an EPS (Electric Power Steering) system that would not cause controllability to decline even when the vehicle was operated with a low steering angle at high vehicle speeds. Driver-vehicle system simulations were used to establish a target for an allowable value of cogging torque at the steering wheel that would not cause a decline in controllability even at high speeds, when steering angles are low and close to the steering wheel center. First, a target for cogging torque was set to ensure that controllability did not decline at high vehicle speeds. To set the target, lane changing simulations using a human-vehicle system model was conducted. Tests in a driving simulator were then conducted with test subjects to verify the simulation results. The target value was established on the basis of these studies.
