The new 1.8-litre TFSI engine is the entry-level powerplant in the petrol engine line-up for the new Audi A4. The engine delivering 118 kW bases on the unit already introduced in the Audi A3, being modified and further developed for longitudinal installation, it replaces the 1.8-l 5V TMPI. It combines the use of direct injection and a turbocharger. On the basis of the TFSI concept a new basic engine, a new high-pressure injection system and a new integral manifold module for the turbocharger have been developed. The main targets were high levels of specific torque at low engine speeds, along with improved quality and lower weight. In this paper the balancing shaft drive gears in the engine blocks are described. Further issues of the paper are: - toothed chain, - variable camshaft control system, - regulated oil pump, - multifunctional engine ancillary bracket, - turbocharger-manifold module, - fuel system, - thermodynamics, - injectors, - stationary full load, - dynamics.
