DaimlerChrysler has been involved in fuel cell technology for nearly 15 years and has released the largest fleet of zero emission fuel cell vehicles in the world with a total number of around 100 vehicles. Almost 2.2 million kilometers had been accumulated by June of 2006. These vehicles are equipped with sophisticated telematics systems, in order to generate fuel cell system knowledge for future developments. DaimlerChrysler has built 36 Citaro fuel cell buses. 30 buses were operated within the CUTE and ECTOS program. The CUTE, or Clean Urban Transport for Europe, program involved the demonstration of 27 Citaro fuel cell buses in nine European cities. Two years of everyday commercial use and operation started in 2003 in the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, Luxembourg, Portugal, and Sweden. The F-Cell passenger cars are operated in customer hands in Germany, Japan, Singapore, and the USA. The majority of vehicles operated in the United States, including the Sprinter cargo vans, are part of the U.S. Department of Energy sponsored program entitled 'Controlled Hydrogen Fleet and Infrastructure Demonstration and Validation Project'. The F-Cell passenger cars offer a maximum engine power of 87 hp/65 kW, a maximum torque of 210 Nm and a maximum speed of 140 km/h (electronically limited). The next generation zero-emission F-Cell is based on a Mercedes-Benz B-class vehicle, which is a compact sports tourer vehicle. The motor has more than 136 hp/100 kW of power. Improvements in consumption and tank capacity will increase the range of the car to 400 km. Also reliability and lifetime of the components will be significantly improved. Another important feature is its freeze-start capability. DaimlerChrysler has installed a special service infrastructure to support the worldwide fleet operation of fuel cell vehicles. This enables the company to record and analyze real world customer operation data with the scope of next generation fuel cell system development.
