A driver's gaze direction and open/close state of the eyes provide useful information for estimating the person's attentive state. Such information can be obtained in several ways, such as with a 3-D eye position measurement system that extracts a drivers facial features from images taken with a stereo camera or with a system that irradiates a drivers eyes with near-infrared light and captures the corneal reflex with a camera. Another method that is used is to take images of a drivers face with a camera and analyze them manually using an off-line processing system. In this study, a system was developed for judging a driver's gaze direction and open/closed state of the eyes by processing facial images captured with a monocular camera installed in the instrument panel. The results of this study confirmed the following two points: (1) The gaze features of individual drivers can be obtained automatically from the face orientation and the eye orientation, making it possible to distinguish changes in the gaze direction. (2) Information on the open/close state of the eyes can be obtained from the aspect ratio of a drivers eyes.
