A key driver for railway rolling stock from light rail vehicles through to high speed trains and locomotives is the associated power electronics propulsion technology. Today this propulsion technology is largely based on 2 level IGBT inverter drives with ratings from 200 kVA for light rail vehicles to 1.8 MVA for locomotives. This paper will describe the modern range of IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) propulsion drives in use today on the different types of rolling stock with a special focus on high speed trains, including the traction drive for the speed record breaking V150 train. The paper also describes trends for future traction drives including power integration which will lead to weight, volume and cost reduction.
