Welded aluminum boats have been in service upwards of 50 years with only two serious corrosion problems. The first problem occurred in 1968 and led to the development of the -H116 temper, a new intergranular/exfoliation resistant temper for 5086, 5083, and 5456 alloys. No serious corrosion problems were reported for another 30 years until 2000 - 2001 when the use of some one million pounds of uncertified 5083-H321 tempered plate resulted in stress corrosion cracking of hull plates on several boats built in the Pacific Northwest. Boats in other areas of the U.S. and Canada were not affected. This article gives details on the establishment of the new ASTM Standard 928, which assures that the -H321 temper, as well as the -H116 temper, is resistant to intergranular (IG) corrosion, exfoliation, and stress corrosion cracking. The follow-up Task Group activities to relate the Nitric Acid Mass Loss Test (NAMLT) mass loss values to field and service performance are also provided.
