Based on the cost trade-off and achieved results, induction welding has proven to be highly cost efficient. It needs no additional susceptor material, particularly when the structures are made of reinforced carbon fiber. Welds of superior strength can be produced by a reliable automatic welding process within the materials processing window. Induction welding of carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastics has been brought forward from the coupon level (NASA TRL3) to a full scale control surface successfully welded in an aerospace production facility (TRL 7/8).
